Prenups: How to bring them up to a fiance

Prenuptial agreements are highly useful in the event a married couple divorces. An increasing number of couples have discovered the benefits of a prenup, and they can help lead to a more peaceful divorce should the relationship get to that point.

Although couples can establish an agreement regarding the division of assets after tying the knot, it is much easier to do so before marriage. However, a lot of people are nervous about broaching the subject of a premarital agreement to a partner. There is no way to discuss the matter without touching upon the possibility of divorce. Luckily, there are ways to have a fruitful conversation.

Offer plenty of reassurance

A fiance may naturally feel hurt that you believe the marriage may end one day. That is why you need to focus on the practical benefits of the document. This is an opportunity for both people to be completely transparent with their assets and finances. In fact, many couples build a stronger bond after signing a prenup because now they go into the marriage even more resolute than before.

Bring up other essential documents

It is a fact that all marriages will end one way or another, either through divorce or death. In addition to creating a prenup, this is also a good time for both people to write wills if they have not done so already.

Remain straightforward

When it comes to something as serious as a prenup, it is good to get directly to the point. You can mention how your lawyer brought it up and how it sounds like a good idea. Make sure you bring it up at a time when you both can sit down for a while to discuss the matter. Examples of good times to bring it up are when the two of you are in the middle of a conversation about student loan debts or establishing a joint savings account.
